in its care – and now the organisation is calling on the community to help find “forever homes” and foster carers for many of those animals. As difficult as this prolonged period of self-isolation will be, the RSPCA says it’s the perfect time to take in a new pet. Not only will carers be home to provide plenty of attention and training, the animals provide much-needed companionship for those feeling lonely. “Now is the ideal time to adopt an animal and ease the transition period of welcoming them into their new home,” says Kieran Watson, a spokesperson for RSPCA NSW. “Animals make great companions and their love and loyalty is pure and priceless. Having my rescue dog by my side lifts my spirits every day, and I think people are looking for that little extra spark of joy and happiness given the current climate.” Watson says people have cottoned onto the idea – pet adoptions in NSW are up from 228 at the start of the month to 390 this past week. “Having a companion to be there and ‘listen’ to you, even if they can’t speak back, is important for our mental health, especially now,” says Watson. “Pets can also provide a structure for your daily life that you might feel is currently missing.” RSPCA NSW has about about 500 dogs, 170 puppies, 500 cats and almost 1000 kittens (as well as rabbits, horses and guinea pigs) currently in its care. Watson stresses that these animals require a long-term commitment – it’s not just a matter of looking after a pet for a couple of weeks, then sending them back when the shutdown ends. For animal-lovers who can’t commit long-term, the organisation is also seeking foster carers to help with the influx of animals arriving at the shelters during this period. Because of coronavirus, the adoption process has changed. Those interested in adopting a pet are being asked to fill out a form and book an appointment for a meet-and-greet. All animals adopted from RSPCA NSW are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and behaviourally and medically assessed. Sydney’s Archie Rose Distilling Co&nbsp;has pivoted from its usual line-up of gins and whiskies to make&nbsp;4500 half-litre bottles of hand sanitiser&nbsp;with grapefruit, cassia, cardamom and thyme botanical gin distillates. The company says it has access to high-grade alcohol, and the switch not only helps to fill the nationwide shortage for hand sanitiser, it keeps staff employed following the government’s closure of bars and pubs to curb the spread of the virus. “We as a business and team – along with the retail and hospitality industries, and all Australians – are facing incredibly difficult times,” says Archie Rose founder Will Edwards. “We are, however, in a very unique position to manufacture this essential product, leading to the tough but clear decision to divert our spirits capacity to manufacture hand sanitiser.” The product, which follows the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for safe and effective sanitiser, is so popular that it’s sold out – and there’s now a waiting list, and customers will be sent notifications when new stock is ready. While the original products was bottled in handsome glass vessels, a shortage of bottles means you could receive your sanitiser in a clear or amber PET bottle or a glass bottle. The bottles will cost $20, with a limit of six bottles per person. South Australian distillery Prohibition Liquor Co&nbsp;is known for its small-batch craft gin – and now its juniper-scented hand sanitiser. “Being a distillery and having access to high-strength alcohol, we decided to make a small batch of our own,” the company announced on&nbsp;Instagram&nbsp;last week. “We’re not in the hand-sanitiser business and don’t intend to be, but we figured if we are going to make it for ourselves, why not make a small batch for the broader Prohibition family?” You can’t buy the Prohibition hand sanitiser on its own. Each 100 millilitre bottle comes free with a bottle of gin (prices start at $99), which is a pretty fitting purchase for times like these anyway. Sydney producer Manly Spirits Co&nbsp;has decided to transform its botanical gin alcohol into five-litre bottles of gin-scented hand sanitiser to help local community groups, charities and organisations that have struggled to get supplies. The northern beaches distillery is also selling 100 millilitre bottles in packs of 10. Both sizes are sold out right now, but they should be back in stock on April 8 and available online. Earp Distilling Co, a family-run distillery that’s been operating in Newcastle since 1883, is also now in the sanitiser game. Demand has been so high it’s had lines of people snaking out its Carrington distillery door. Earp’s liquid sanitiser&nbsp;is made according to WHO recommendations, with 80 per cent ethanol, and is available in two sizes: $40 for one litre and $20 for 500 millilitres. The company is out of stock right now, but it’s working on getting pre-orders and online sales set up so you can buy even if you don’t live nearby. Finally, Sydney rum makers Brix Distillers&nbsp;is now making liquid hand sanitiser, available in 300 millilitre spray packs (there are also refill bottles in 200 millilitre and 700 millilitre sizes). Sales have been brisk and there are limits on individual orders,&nbsp;but stock is still available.You also get one free if you buy a bottle of rum. The budding microbiologist is turning over a new leaf (boom-tish) and moving her retail plant business, Microcosm, into a shared studio space in Marrickville, which will allow her to focus on her commercial work while still hosting plant parties and weekend markets. Stewart – who will finish her honours in microbiology in June before starting a PhD – says she struggled to maintain the Petersham shopfront when demand for her commercial work began to take off. (She’s worked with clients such as Aesop,&nbsp;Willie the Boatman&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Paramount House Hotel.) “Petersham was such a beautiful space, but I was only using it two half-days on the weekend and paying rent the whole time,” she says. “I was at a crossroads. I thought there must be a smarter way to do this.” Microcosm is now located near Marrickville favourites Grifter Brewing Co&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Vic on the Park. Stewart will host monthly plant parties in the space, where friends can catch up over a drink and peruse seasonal plants (sourced from NSW nurseries) and products from local artists. Her first event, on Friday March 6, will celebrate the new digs. There’ll be pots, keep cups and vases by Emi Ceramics&nbsp;for sale; colourful doughnuts from Redfern’s&nbsp;Donut Papi; drinks by leafy neighbours&nbsp;Poor Toms; and music by Pannotia and DJ Bodie, who run the Club USU&nbsp;radio show&nbsp;and parties. Then on Saturday, Microcosm will host a plant market where people can stock up on lush plants, soil and colourful Mr Kitly self-watering pots. “The relationships I built from the Petersham shop are definitely what have made me want to keep these events going,” Stewart says. “I had the choice of doing commercial work and just having an online presence, but I love the interactions that I have with people. “It’s really fun walking someone through their first home plant and knowing that it’s going to be their gateway plant. I really wanted to keep that.” Microcosm will also host talks so people can learn about plants and other social issues in a casual and fun way. “It’s nice – in a really soft, gentle, non-preachy way – to have a place to talk to people about environmental things in a way that’s comfortable,” says Stewart. “It can be as simple as buying really nice soil from your local area.” Stewart says she wants to encourage people in the city to live greener through her hands-on plant-care workshop, Plant Parenthood, which she plans on running once a quarter. Participants will learn how to pot plants while snacking on cheese and drinking cocktails. “It’s nice to see people appreciate the nature around them,” she says. “And it can all start with a first house plant.” The opening plant party runs from 6pm to 9pm on Friday March 6, followed by the plant market on Saturday March 7 from 10am–3pm.
